James Secor followed his older brother, Joseph, in the operation of the wholesale house, Secor, Berdan & Co., a pioneer Toledo business.

He was also involved in banking interests and helped incorporate and served as president of the Woolson Spice Co. It was one of the largest manufacturing concerns of its kind in the country.  

He was described as "liberal in his charities".
